banh mi battle

ok, so i know yall have heard a lot from me on this lately, but here's one more. also, i've been doing an informal survey on the best banh mi in seattle. i will be presenting the results here in not too long. but for now, look at this website's attempt to solve this age-old dilemma: where is the best vietnamese sandwich?

marching on olympia

this is a nice little video from the national examiner of an event we attended a few weeks back. it was cold and rainy, but that didn't detract from the fervor of the participants (well, maybe a little). i'm just glad i'm not in the video - they interviewed me, but i was intentionally boring (and white) in my comments so i got cut in the final edit. so so glad.

just click on the screen and it'll start playing:

vietnamese sandwich wars

seriously... this is really getting out of control. this seattle times writer published a piece in february naming seattle deli and yeh yehs in lynnwood as the best vietnamese sandwich in the pacific northwest. then she asked for readers' opionions, to which she got some tips from seattle readers. she published her follow-up article in last friday's paper.

the second article really should be entitled: i apologize. i was wrong. i was stupid. i am white. yeh yehs and whatever else she thought was so amazing up in edmonds is not the best place to get viet sandwiches - but tonys and tammys in SEATTLE. (which, if anyone had asked me, i woulda told them "tonys and tammys in seattle." in fact, those two shops should get married already... their child would clearly be the best sandwich ever.

see the significant shift in her second article. the piece is brimming over with a conciliatory and repentant tone.

also, if you do go over there to tonys or tammys - get your grilled pork sandwich with egg. its the best thing ever. and if you go, let me know... i'll join you on my lunch break.

mailing the race card

sometimes racism can send you to jail for a year (and 1 day.) republican, tan nguyen, in his 2006 campaign against democrat incumbent loretta sanchez, arranged for spanish language flyers to be mailed to the homes of registered voters with latino surnames threatening that immigrants could go to jail for voting in the usa, and that they might end up in prison. then he lied to investigators about it. well, clearly his claims are not true: it depends on one's immigration status... and i don't want to make any assumptions here, but mr. nguyen is possibly an immigrant himself? so maybe he shoulda mailed the flyer to his own home, and he might have saved himself a year (and 1 day) in jail.
